About the Role

We are looking for a talented and passionate individual to join our dynamic and experienced team as Initiative Director will be responsible for the planning, execution, and closing of special initiatives within scope, on time, and within budget. The Director works cross-functionally with GSHNJ leadership to lead and align initiatives with Girl Scouts’ mission and fulfill the organization’s strategic objectives. This includes optimizing the initiatives’ value, outcomes, and impact while building professional relationships with key stakeholders including GSHNJ staff, vendors and strategic partners. The first initiative will be managing the build out of our new experience center in Newark, NJ.

Here's What You Will Be Doing...
Works closely with council leadership to manage the wholistic planning, execution, and closing of special initiatives that fulfill GSHNJ’s strategic objectives.
-Coordinates and collaborates cross-functionally to define objectives, deliverables, timelines, budgets, and expected outcomes.
-Identifies risks and develops mitigation strategies.
-Ensures compliance with relevant laws, codes, regulations, standards, and safety protocols.
-Manages projects’ scope, resources, and budgets.
-Monitors progress, tracks milestones, and regularly communicates with key stakeholders.
-Identifies key stakeholders and fosters relationships that maximize resources, partnerships, and negotiations.
-Optimizes and ensures adherence to internal policies, procedures, business processes, and workflows to meet business demand while maintaining brand and fiscal standards.
-Engages in troubleshooting, problem solving, and conflict resolution to maintain a customer-centric environment.

Provides leadership and direction to team and ensures team has knowledge, skills, tools, and resources necessary to deliver on assignments timely and effectively. This includes:
-Establishes team goals and priorities, initiatives regular check-ins, assigns projects and monitors progress and key performance indicators and adjusts assignments accordingly.
-Optimizes and ensures adherence to internal policies, procedures, business processes, and workflows to maintain brand standards, staff efficiency, and to meet business demand.
-Develops career development plans with employees and ensures plans are implemented.
-Serves as point of escalation for conflict or dissatisfaction among team.

Ensures Girl Scouting is open to all appropriate youth and adults by actively participating in the development of environments that foster diversity, equity, inclusion, and access through words, actions, and attitude.

Complies with GSHNJ’s Charter of Values, and uses it as the basis for personal conduct, conflict resolution, and correspondence with customers and coworkers.

Remains current on GSUSA’s and GSHNJ’s initiatives and national and local trends affecting our membership demographic and is able to correspond with team members and customers accordingly. Attends GSUSA webinars, participates in Chatter groups, and utilizes gsConnect.

Performs other duties as necessary or assigned.


Is this you?

  • Associate degree or completion of specialized certification.

  • 5-8 years of relevant experience.

  • Strong understanding of project management methodologies, tools, and techniques.

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office, Asana or other project management software, and web-browsing software. 

  • Ability to quickly learn new software applications as necessary.

  • Strong project manager skills with demonstrated ability to manage multiple tasks with conflicting priorities and deadlines.

  • Effective communicator with demonstrated ability to manage internal and external communications in a thorough and clear manner with a diverse group of stakeholders.

  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.

  • Demonstrated ability to resolve conflicts.

  • Ability to formulate individual and team daily workflows, short- and long-term goals, objectives, schedules, and priorities in line with GSHNJ’s strategic and management plans.

  • Ability to build, coach and develop an effective, high performing team by promoting partnerships between functional units, collaboratively defining boundaries and outcomes of work responsibilities; sharing information with others; recognizing and rewarding team’s accomplishments; collaborating with others to create optimal solutions.

  • Demonstrated abilities in project management methodologies, tools, and techniques including planning, evaluation, and analysis.

  • Ability to make sound and timely business decisions; escalates as necessary.

  • Ability to prioritize work, train, and delegate to others.


Preferred Education and Experience

  • PMP certification or equivalent.

  • Experience with Asana or other project management software.

  • 2 years working in the non-profit sector.

  • Logistics.

  • Real estate.


Additional Eligibility Qualifications

  • Flexibility to shift work hours as needed, including evenings and weekends.

  • Ability to lift and manipulate up to 30 pounds of Girl Scouting products, supplies, or materials.

  • A valid driver’s license, current insurance, and access to a reliable vehicle are required for travel between council properties and across entire service area as needed.

  • Must become a registered member of Girl Scouts and maintain membership for duration of employment.

  • The job is primarily performed from home, but employee is expected to be “on site” as needed. Occasionally, Employee will need to attend meetings, trainings, or work events that may be held in any of these locations, others throughout council jurisdiction, or virtually. The first initiative will be managing the build out of our new experience center in Newark, NJ.
