About the Role

Position Overview:
The Energy Foundation seeks a consultant to serve as the New Jersey Deputy Director to help lead our statewide coalition in advocating for equitable and impactful clean energy and climate policies. This role will focus on strengthening coalition infrastructure, advancing state-level policy priorities, and providing tailored support to equity-focused grantees. The ideal candidate will have a proven ability to foster coordination among diverse stakeholders, manage multiple projects, and ensure that policies and initiatives center those most impacted by climate change.
As Deputy Director, you will work closely with the State Director to support coalition partners in achieving shared goals, facilitate collaboration, and ensure that resources are deployed effectively to build a just and sustainable clean energy future in New Jersey. This position offers an exciting opportunity to contribute directly to advancing policy in energy, transportation, and environmental justice sectors.

Key Responsibilities:
1. Coalition Infrastructure Support:
○ Coordinate and strengthen relationships among a diverse set of grassroots organizations, advocates, and stakeholders in New Jersey’s clean energy and climate movement.
○ Provide strategic support to the State Director, Coalition Steering Committee, and coalition members, ensuring clear communication and alignment on key objectives and shared goals.
○ Support coalition restructuring and facilitate coalition meetings, strategy sessions, and convenings, ensuring that partners are effectively collaborating towards common policy goals.

2. State Policy Priorities:
○ Support the development and implementation of 2-3 key state policy priorities in clean energy and climate justice, working closely with the State Director, Steering Committee, and consultants to execute a thoughtful strategy.
○ Provide project management, tracking, and research support for policy priorities, ensuring that state priorities are advanced through well-coordinated efforts.
○ Work with the Government Relations and Communications consultants to track relevant state-level activities to monitor and influence state policy development.

3. Equity Grantee Support:
○ Provide dedicated support to equity-focused grantees, ensuring they receive the resources, technical assistance, and capacity-building support necessary to drive equitable policy outcomes.
○ Foster a collaborative approach among grantees, ensuring alignment around shared goals, strategies, and targets, particularly for communities disproportionately impacted by climate change.
○ Coordinate with the State Director on the distribution of grants, track grantee progress, and work with grantees to overcome challenges and build their capacity to execute climate justice initiatives.

4. Leadership and Capacity Building:
○ Collaborate with the State Director to develop and deploy impact measurement tools, evaluate project progress, and adjust strategies as necessary.
○ Support the development of training and capacity-building initiatives to strengthen coalition partners’ effectiveness in advocating for climate and clean energy policies.
○ Oversee ongoing reporting for coalition efforts, ensuring accountability and progress towards collective goals.
5. Ongoing Research, Tracking, and Monitoring:
○ Stay up-to-date on New Jersey’s clean energy and climate policy landscape, tracking and monitoring relevant state and federal releases, policy shifts, and emerging opportunities.
○ Provide insights and recommendations to the State Director and coalition partners on strategic responses to key developments in the policy environment.

Compensation:
The Deputy Director will be hired as a consultant with an annual retainer in the range of $85,000 - $105,000, based on experience. This position requires approximately 30-40 hours per week, with a flexible schedule and remote work. In-state travel is required.

Qualifications:

We are seeking candidates who are passionate about climate justice, skilled in project management, and have strong relationship-building abilities. The ideal candidate will have:

● A track record of working with a diverse set of stakeholders, including grassroots organizations, advocacy groups, and policymakers.

● Proven ability to manage multiple projects and teams, including overseeing consultants,

grantees, and coalition members.

● Strong experience in equity-focused initiatives, particularly in advocating for policies that

center marginalized communities.

● Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to engage and inspire

diverse audiences, including communities of color and economically disadvantaged

groups.

● Familiarity with New Jersey’s legislative and political environment, with experience in

advocacy, government relations, or grassroots organizing preferred.

● A commitment to fostering racial, economic, and environmental justice through policy

and action.
