The committees address our 4 core commitments to community engagement, environmental health, urban sustainability, and economic opportunity.

Rob Garcia

Proud resident of Newark for 8 years, Robert Garcia is a Professional Landscape Architect committed to creating equitable and sustainable communities. Since graduating from Iowa State University, Robert has continued to lead cross-sector initiatives that promote environmental justice, community engagement, and climate resilience. Their passion for public service and creating a greener future fuels continued efforts to bridge urban improvements and policy, driving change where it's needed most.

X Brathwaite

X Braithwaite is a dedicated advocate for social justice, equality, and environmental stewardship. Born and raised in Newark, NJ, X graduated from Science Park High School and went on to earn degrees in Community & Justice Studies and African & African American Studies. Currently as the New Jersey Environmental Justice Organizer for Clean Water Action, X works to empower communities overburdened by pollution, advocating for systemic change and holding legislators accountable. By fostering meaningful community engagement and deepening public understanding of environmental justice as a fundamental human rights issue, X strives to build collective power and inspire action at every level. In addition to her role at Clean Water Action, X serves as the co-chair of the Newark Branch NAACP Environmental Justice Committee and is a member of the Environmental Justice Advisory Council for the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection. Her advocacy extends across intersecting areas of carceral, economic, racial, and environmental justice.

Sky Lara

Sky Lara is born, raised, and educated in Newark, NJ with a Bachelors in Public Administration from Rutgers University- Newark. They are dedicated to promoting environmental sustainability initiatives that improve the City of Newark's wellness through event and program coordination. Sky has administrative roles as Newark Green Team's Support Specialist and NewarkDIG's Administrative Coordinator. Sky is dedicated to improving resource accessibility for multilingual speaking residents by sharing WIC and SNAP program information in Spanish and English. They seasonally support Urban Agriculture Cooperative by translating and operating an informational table about SNAP and WIC programs. In the summer of 2025, Sky will be coordinating and overseeing the operations and planning of La Casa de Don Pedro's summer farmer markets as the Farmer Markets Manager.

Nathaly Agosto Filión serves as New Jersey’s Deputy Chief Climate Resilience Officer, sitting within the Office of Climate Resilience at the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection. Agosto Filión works closely with New Jersey Chief Resilience Officer Nick Angarone and the Office of Climate Resilience team to accelerate the implementation of statewide resilience policy and programs developed in partnership with the New Jersey Interagency Council on Climate Resilience (IAC). In this capacity, Agosto Filión is the lead staff supporting IAC publication development, workgroups, and the day-to-day operations of the IAC. She was the primary author and process facilitator advancing the development of New Jersey’s Extreme Heat Resilience Action Plan. To learn more about IAC, visit resiliencecouncil.nj.gov. Before joining the DEP in October 2022, Agosto Filión served as Chief Sustainability Officer for the City of Newark, NJ; Resiliency Manager with Sustainable Jersey; and Program Officer with the Institute for Sustainable Communities. Throughout her career, Nathaly has helped to develop, design, and deliver national and regional capacity-building programs for local government and community-based climate and sustainability practitioners. Agosto Filión earned B.S. and M.S. degrees in Natural Resources from the University of Vermont. She is purpose-driven in her efforts to help build healthy, sustainable, resilient communities; diversify the environmental movement; and fight for climate justice.

Get to know the Chairman of the Newark Green Team, Nicole Miller!

Nicole Miller

Nicole Miller is a parent, business owner and advocate who lives in Newark, NJ. Principal of MnM Consulting, Nicole specializes in brand strategy, content creation, clean energy and sustainability education for business and general audiences as well as media development, and digital and print publishing. As an advocate, Nicole has been a local and regional leader on water and energy issues for over a decade. Nicole’s years of work have been focused on breaking down the siloes between healing environmental justice communities, improving municipal land use, empowering communities, improving our water and energy infrastructure, and supporting meaningful and impactful legislation. Nicole is a member of the Newark Environmental Commission, advising the Mayor and City Council on sustainability issues; Chair of the Newark Green Team; Co-Chair of NewarkDIG (Doing Infrastructure Green) dedicated to resilient and sustainable municipal stormwater management; Co-Chair of the Jersey Water Works Steering Committee, a statewide coalition focused on improving NJ’s aging water infrastructure; a member of the Rutgers Newark Climate Advisory Group; Vice-Chair of the NJ Progressive Equitable Energy Coalition (NJPEEC); and a member of the Clean Energy Action Now (CLEAN) and Clean Energy Jobs coalitions. Nicole is currently serving as a member of the Governor’s Building Electrification Workgroup, the Board of Public Utilities’ Energy Efficiency Workforce Development Working Group and as an Equity Advisor to the New Jersey Climate Change Alliance.

NGT supports green economic opportunities by sharing green jobs and grant opportunities.

Trees

NGT wants to address the heat island effect, support tree canopy initiatives, and support tree planting coordinations.

NGT wants to create opportunities for environmental leaders and residents to connect and network with one another.
