Newark Water Department has been collecting data since 1893. They collect data on what precipitation has fallen, take temperature readings, and submit the data. The city sends the data to both the office of the New Jersey State Climatologist and the National Weather Service center that archives the data.
The city has earned national and worldwide recognition for its over 100 years of collecting and submitting data. One award is from the World Meteorological Organization, based in Geneva Switzerland, and the other is from the National Weather Service.
